O ANTONIS

There on the wide stairs
the stairs of tears
In the deep winter grave
In the quarry of laments

Jews and partisans fall
Jews and partisans fall
They carry a boulder on their backs
The boulder, cross of death.

There the voice
The voice, the voice Antonis hears
oh comrade, oh comrade
Help me climb the stairs.

But there, on the wide stairs
On the stairs of tears
This help in an insult
This mercy, a curse.

The Jew falls on the step
And the stairs redden
And you, brave young man, come here
Carry a double boulder.

I can carry a double, a triple boulder
They call me Antonis
And if you’ re a man, come here
To the marble threshing – floor
